Start Strong, Stay Stronger: Beginner-Friendly Racquets for Long-Term Play

You may hear some coaches say “Get a light racquet” when beginner players ask about which racquet they should buy. Then, players go and buy “Lite” racquets like 270g unstrung weight and some might be happy with it and some might not be. Buying a racquet is an individual choice and everyone’s physique is different.

To me, the main factors when choosing a racquet are:

  • grip (check out this video from tennis warehouse on how to find your grip)
  • weight
  • forgiving

You need a racquet which you can swing for a long time, which means a weight you are comfortable with and a relatively forgiving, i.e. a relatively large sweet spot, i.e. a large head size.

The best way is to test it out. Check out my blog Rally Ready: A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing Your First Racquet for guidance.

Good racquets don’t come cheap and if you are thinking about playing tennis in the long term, here are some racquets I think has the best values that will help you start your journey and keep you in the game.

All racquets listed below are of the same specifications:

  • Head Size: 100 sq.in.
  • Weight: 300 g / 10.6 oz
  • Length: 27 in.
  • Stringing Pattern: 16 x 19
  • Stringing Advice: 45 - 60 lbs
